Donaldson Company is the leading manufacturer of HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters. HEPA filters have a removal efficiency of 99.97 percent of all 0.3µm particles. The 0.3µm benchmark is used in efficiency ratings, because it approximates the most difficult particle size for a filter to capture. The filters are even more efficient in removing both smaller particles (tobacco smoke, atmospheric dust, microbiological material) and larger ones (lint, pollen).
HEPA filters can be especially effective in removing bacteria and microbial aerosols from aircraft cabin air.
Because these microbiological organisms are likely to stick to larger particles — in the 1µm to 10µm range — the filter efficiency for particles carrying bacteria or virus is much higher than the minimum efficiency.

Donaldson’s computer-controlled manufacturing line pleats a continuous sheet of glass fiber media while spacing each pleat with non-flammable hot melt beads. Each filter is one continuous sheet of media, eliminating any leakage through seals and increasing the structural strength.The configuration of beads allows substantially more media surface area to be packed into each filter. The beads are placed only between the pleats, so not to cover filter media on the pleat tips and to reduce the filter’s weight. Donaldson filters are carefully tested to assure filter efficiency, integrity, and performance.
